What We Do

The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry (KMFP) Inc. was founded in 1983 to provide food to needy families in the Northern Bayshore Area of Monmouth County. The founder of the pantry, O.O. John Reed, saw a need within the communities and started providing the services to a small group of families. By 1992 the number had grown to twenty (20) families and today the pantry provides food, clothing and other items to over (one hundred-eighty) 180 families a month.
Due to the increase in the number of clients, the pantry saw a need to construct a building by which it could better serve the families that come to us for assistance. In 2005 a new building fundraiser was initiated and thanks to the support we received from so many, the property that Community Church of Keyport leased to us and the Community Block Grant we received we were able to officially open our doors at 42 Elizabeth Street in Keyport on January 2015.
Our Volunteers, all of which are unpaid for their service, include the KMFP Board of Trustees, KMFP Isaiah Cooper, Executive Director and over twenty-five additional volunteers that donate their services on a full or part-time basis. The work done by all the volunteers at the pantry goes beyond our days of operation. Volunteers are on hand for Foodbank deliveries, accepting food donations and other donations from outside sources, picking up food at different establishments that donate food to us, going shopping to buy additional food when we are low, being available to someone that might need emergency food and the list goes on. As we all know Volunteers are the heart of an organization and at the pantry we are no exception, without our volunteers we would not be able to accomplish all that we do to better serve our clientele.

The pantry is a member of the Food Bank of Monmouth/Ocean Counties and receives food from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the State Food Purchase Program (SFPP) via the food bank. In order to provide additional items to our clients the pantry receives generous donations of both food and/or money, clothing and other items from the original nine (9) churches that make up the Ministerium, other Churches, Civic and Private Organizations, Businesses, Schools, Boy Scouts, U.S. Postal Service, Individual Donors and so many others. We are eternally grateful for all the donations we receive – “No donation is ever too small” and all are welcomed.

All our clients are screened to ensure that they qualify for pantry assistance. In addition to providing food and clothing we also provide assistance in locating other specific services. We have knowledge of, or gather information on Veteran Affairs, SNAP (Food Stamps), and numerous other programs to assist our clients with their specific needs. We also have staff members that are fluent in Spanish and are able to assist our Spanish clientele.
Regardless of our client’s situation they are all treated with courtesy and respect. When they walk through our doors they are greeted with a reassuring smile which makes them feel welcomed, know that they are not alone and that we are here to help. At times they need to talk about their problems and although we may not be able to resolve them we still take the time to listen. They are all very grateful for the services we provide to them and also for just being there when they need a shoulder to lean on during their difficult times.

Just Give
