“Veteran’s Day” Thank you to all our Veterans, to all who are currently serving and all their families. And Happy Thanksgiving!

Great Game – The weather was “iffy” but that did not stop the game on October 3rd.  The Shore Shock Softball Organization challenged the Union Beach Police Department to a double-header game at Scholer Park in Union Beach.  What was the reason for the game you might ask? A very good question, it was a food drive for the KMFP.  People that came to the game donated non-perishable food items for our organization and we received proceeds from the food sales at the game toward the purchase of food.  In addition, we also received a monetary donation from the Shore Shock Softball Organization toward the purchase of food.  Representing the KMFP along with me at the game were; Rev. Matt Thiringer (KMFP Chairman Board of Trustees), Ken Connors (KMFP Trustee), Marge Conway (KMFP Associate Director), Ben Defibaugh (KMFP Volunteer), Maria Connors (KMFP Registrar).  Thank you to ALL that made this event possible – Shore Shock Softball Organization, Union Beach Police Dept., Union Hose Fire Co., Union Beach First Aid, Event Sponsors, all the people that volunteered their time and to all that made donations.

Senior Organizations Donate – Food donations come to us via many sources (i.e. individuals, churches, businesses, and organizations).  I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to two (2) organizations – Keyport Senior Center, which has been an ongoing supporter of our organization for a long time and this year we welcome a new supporter the Union Beach Senior Organization.  These organizations have been providing food donations to us, which come from their members, allowing us to give our clients a little extra food assistance. We want ALL the members from these organizations to know that we are truly grateful for their donations and support.

29th Annual Crop Walk for the Hungry – was held on October 18th in Red Bank.  This great event is held every year to benefit local charities and the KMFP is one of them.  We are truly grateful for all the donations we received.  Thank You for making, us part of your cause, and to ALL that coordinated this event as well as the Walkers and the Sponsors.

Mother's Club of Keyport "Make A Difference Day" Annual Food Drive – was held on October 24th. The organization collects canned and dry goods, which in turn is provided to different organizations.  Our organization was fortunate enough to have received three (3) truckloads of non-perishable items for distribution.  Also during the month of October, the school district holds a “Penny Harvest”.  The pennies collected are turned into local supermarket gift cards and are donated for distribution to assist those less fortunate. Our organization receives gift cards from this fundraiser as well for distribution to our clients. Thank You to the Mother’s Club of Keyport for all their hard work in coordinating this effort and to ALL the residents of Keyport and Union Beach for their donations toward the Food Drive and ALL of those that are contributing and have contributed to the Penny Harvest project.

Keyport Garden Club – donated their fresh produce and herbs to us for distribution to our clients during the Summer season.  Our clients were delighted with the fresh locally grown vegetables and herbs.  The season has ended, but our gratitude and appreciation to the Keyport Garden Club continues to grow.  Thank you to ALL the Keyport Garden Club members for their hard work and donations.

You hear it, read it, or see it everyday – people turning to food pantries or other charitable organizations for assistance now more than ever.  We can assure you that it is a fact based on our experience.  The number of people coming to us for not only food but for other types of assistance has been overwhelming.  We are experiencing a large number of people who are unemployed and cannot find a job, people whose unemployment benefits have run out, Seniors who can not make ends meet, households that only have one income coming in, families that are losing their homes, Veterans, Grandparents caring for their grandchildren, and the list goes on.  As some of you might know, we receive United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) food from the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and from the State Food Purchase Program (SFPP) via the foodbank once a month.  If you were to visit us on delivery day, you would probably say – “Wow look at all the food they have”.   Let me tell you that the USDA and SFPP food we receive is there one minute and gone the next due to the dramatic increase of people we have been experiencing. If it were not for the donations we receive throughout the month from all our supporters, we would not be able to meet the demand.  In ending this section, I want to leave you with the number of people that you have help us feed so far through your donations in 2009–

Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Donations – Please remember those that will not be able to enjoy the holidays like most of us.  When you go shopping for your holiday dinners, please help us by possibly picking up an extra non-perishable food item and donating it to us for distribution.  We also have quite a number of singles and two (2) adult clients who would be very grateful for a small turkey breast or small canned ham with a few small cans of vegetables and other non-perishable items for them to enjoy their holidays as well.  Please contact Marge Conway, KMFP Associate Director Tuesdays, and Thursdays – 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM on (732) 888-1986 during our hours of operation if you wish to make a donation. Due to our limited freezer space if you would like to donate turkeys, hams, etc. we would ask that you contact us first.
